When in doubt… add more gold

For those who know me, I’ve always preferred yellow gold to silver… and it’s not always been seen as the more tasteful choice… with connotations of New Jersey and Miami. But then again, I’ve been obsessed with the Sopranos and I’d love to go to Miami. Lately I’ve been noticing gold tones to be surfacing all around… and I’m craving more. Perhaps its the sign of the times, in economic turmoil, we’ll just act as if the roads are paved with gold, because eventually… it will manifest.

All is Quiet on New Years Day

It may be silence, but it also may be that I’ve lost my hearing from all the fireworks. Last night was delightful, nothing spectacular, we went to a home-cooked dinner party with lovely friends and lit up a bunch of fireworks (yes…that’s legal in Germany too!)

“Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.”

~Oprah

Forgetting all about ‘what to wear’… I left it to the last second to get dressed. Last night I was all about ruffles, a while back, started turning clothes on the edges, making one shoulder dresses. So I took a ruffly skirt, turned it on it’s side, wore another ruffle skirt, and a sequin tube top underneath for a ‘bra’/sweater (sequin tubes are warm arent’ they… it’s counter intuitive, but they are).

I couldn’t get any good pictures of the outfit last night, as it was dark… but I did get some great pics of the fireworks…

Out with a bang…

They might be resolutions…

There is nothing wrong with taking time to figure out with what needs to change, and luckily, it’s always a good time for reflection. Figuring stuff out isn’t reserved for the December 31st.

Tonight we are going to attach our dreams to some rockets and fire them off to the sky.. it’s actually the idea of my good friend, but it sounded like such a good idea, we have to do it, and why not? Fireworks are still legal in Germany.

When trying to remember resolutions I’ve kept…I can only think of a few… quitting smoking in 2007. It actually took a few years of trying, so whether it was a New Years resolution that made it stick is certainly questionable. I happened to quit after 17 years of smoking in January of 2007. Oddly enough, I’ve had better luck with resolutions in February… but no wants to hear about President’s Day Resolutions, or Lent.

There is nothing wrong with taking time to figure out with what needs to change, and luckily, it’s always a good time for reflection. Figuring stuff out isn’t reserved for the December 31st. But since I happen to really be reflecting on this past year, how much it’s changed, how much I’ve changed… how much things have worked, and what didn’t work, what I’m over the moon about and what I’m utterly sick of… I’ve been able to come up with a few things I’d like to attach to a rocket.

1. Be useful, because it’s not about me.

Over the holiday we watched a documentary about Frank Gehry, and he was talking about being self-centered, when you’re young, the world revolves around you… then one day you wake up and realize the world doesn’t revolve around you (and that it’s a good thing it doesn’t) and then that’s when you realize it’s time to get to work, with other people. It’s easy to get caught up in life…the daily goings on, but it’s important to be useful, to be thoughtful, to be helpful or else nothing really has any meaning. Even here on a fashion blog, it’s certainly easy to get caught up in my own musings… but as Seth Goldin says ‘no one cares about you.’ It sounds harsh, but he’s right… and the best blogs out there are useful ones, the best people out there are useful

2. Learn, learn, learn

There are a lot of things that go in this category, but not to bore you with things like CSS… for Christmas, Rocky’s mum gave me her old Pfaff sewing machine. I’ve been tinkering around with DIY projects these past few years, and I’d really like to take the next step… which calls for a sewing machine. I’ve actually wanted to learn to sew since high school, but I’ve never had the patience.

3. Give the ol’ noggin a boost

Even though I’ll never qualify for Mensa… there are lots of studies that show that learning a new language will give the ol’ noggin’ a boost. I’ve lived in Germany for 9 months now and it seems like I’ve gotten as far as the family dog in German word recognition. I can go to the market, barter, ask if you would like a cup of coffee, and decipher a menu… but this year, I’d like to have a conversation, or sit at a dinner party and be able to know what’s going on. Besides, the instructions for my sewing machine are in German… so I better get to it.

4. Focus

Once, a psychiatrist and well, several friends wondered if I had ADHD… like many people today, I exhibit traits, and I may exhibit more than normal, but I do not have ADHD, it’s just a matter of concentration and not checking email, twitter, facebook, ebay as much.

5. Take time for the important stuff

Work is important, but so is taking breaks… take time for family, take time for friends. I didn’t do it so much in 2008, but I really want to make a point to make more time for the people in my life. It’s important to take time for my own health, to exercise, to sleep well.. every thing will get done, it’s just a matter of focus and patience.

6. Be patient, persistent, but patient

I mentioned that a few times above, it goes with focus but patience isn’t natural for me, and with all good things it comes I just have to be willing to wait until it does.

Do you believe in resolutions? Which ones are you thinking about this year?

I’d love to hear about them… we can all stick togehter to make them come true.

Happy New Year!

My Year of Beauty

Every year I try tons of beauty products and learn as many new beauty tips and tricks as will fit in my brain. I simply cannot help myself. I must learn about what’s new in the world of beauty. I must try the new colors, test the new formulations, sniff the new scents, and slather on as many fabulous lotions and potions as I can, that is, until I start having an allergic reaction from trying too many things. But hey, I’m happy to “suffer” here and there, because beauty goodies give me a thrill. I love the glamour packed into a luxurious powder compact, the exhilaration of a refreshing scent, the nurturing of a satiny skin cream… I love it all.

This year has been an especially good year of beauty for me, since I got the opportunity to write about beauty here on The Coveted. I’ve had so much fun sharing my experiences as I’ve tried new treats, and in hearing back from the lovely Coveted readers. I hope that you’ve enjoyed my posts and have learned some interesting things along the way.

Best of 2008

As 2008 comes to a close and we take a look back and reflect, I’ve been thinking about the best products I discovered this year. There were so many delights. Here are some that I now turn to again and again for a beauty boost (in no particular order, because that would be just too hard).

Living Nature. I learned and wrote about this cosmetics and skin care line just recently. I consider this to be the Chanel of natural beauty products. Everything is so elegant, truly natural, and impressively effective. I especially love their superchic powder compacts and amazingly flattering bronzer.
International Orange. I had my first facial at IO this year. It was the best facial I’ve ever had, which is no small feat, because I’ve had many over the years.
100% Pure. I wrote about their lovely Peach Pigmented Brightening Concealer in my article about under eye circles. I tried more of their products and am now head over heels for the entire line, which I’ll be writing about more in January.
Liz Earle Superskin Concentrate and Argan Oil. My skin is just radiant from using Liz Earle Superskin Concentrate, which contains lots of argan oil. I also began using pure argan oil all the time on my scalp and nails.
Kabuki Communal Baths. OK, this is an exception. I discovered this years ago. But it’s the best, most affordable spa indulgence I’ve ever found. I wrote about it in my last-minute gifts article. More about the beauty of baths to come in January.
IT Cosmetics Reversible Liner. This came in the My Naughty Mouth kit that I wrote about; but it can be purchased on its own. I found this to be a great lip moisturizer to use before applying lipstick. It seals in moisture and is light enough to not interfere with lip color.
Marie Veronique Crème du Jour. I began using this marvelous multitasker this year. It’s the best face moisturizer/sunscreen I’ve ever used. And I just love that it’s totally natural and gentle enough to use around the eyes.
Jane Iredale Powder-Me SPF. This was the first product I wrote about on The Coveted. I’m hooked on this very natural-looking powder that protects my skin from the sun and comes in a super-convenient bottle with built-in powder puff.

How about you? What did you fall in love with this year?

The Year Ahead

I’ve been trying many more gorgeous goods and have many more articles in the works. Here’s a preview of just a few of the topics I will be writing about in 2009: winter skin and hair care, the perfect nude lip and the perfect red lip, roses in skincare, beautifying teas, and, of course, beauty that fits in your budget.

I’ve also just put together a Beauty Resources page, where I’ll be posting fabulous deals on beauty products and services, and more. There are a few deals posted now. I’ll be posting lots more. I hope it becomes a useful resource for you.

Happy New Year!

Thanks so much for checking out my posts! I hope you’ve had a great year and that your year ahead is filled with beauty. See you in 2009!

It’s an Ipso Facto

Cutting your hair and dying it black always seemed to be the anti-beauty treatment… after all (blonde) Smurfette’s evil sister Sassette had short black hair. I Dream of Jeanie had an evil sister with dark hair… and I don’t know, I could be full of it, but dying my hair black and getting a bowl cut has never been in my mind the crux of “flattering do’s” yet, that’s all I can think about these days… especially after seeing the Ipso Facto spread in Tank Magazine. When I first saw the images, i thougtht it to be another fashion spread, but no, Ipso Facto is a band, and quite a good one at that. Their rather silent-film-arthaus and dirty punk vibe really mix well together, a familiar sound… but not quite. Can I name the band they make me think of? No. But I can think of the dark, dingy, smoky bar where I can imagine hearing them play in.

Anatomy of a Shoe Hunt

…when it comes right down to it, the process is very intuitive. Kind of like falling in love, there are people who have all the things on the list… and it doesn’t work. Then you meet someone who is seemingly impractical, yet is absolutely perfect.

One of the most happy things about the new year isn’t the dreary January weather, it’s the January Sales. It’s usually the time of year where I’ll go on the hunt for a nice pair of sale shoes. Actually, in times past, I’d always be hunting for sale shoes, it was my meditation. I would go to a shoe shop, preferably one where I could access the shoes without help, and try on almost every shoe in the store. It’s crazy, but I love doing it. The thing about shopping for shoes, is that it never makes you feel bad. A shoe will never make you look fat… though they may hurt you more than a sweater ever could, the hunt for a shoe is always sweeter.

There is a fine line between practicality and frumpiness when it comes to shoes. I believe that a shoe can be both practical and beautiful, though it’s hard to come by. I do look for durablitity, details, appropriateness… but when it comes right down to it, the process is very intuitive. Kind of like falling in love, there are people who have all the things on the list… and it doesn’t work. Then you meet someone who is seemingly impractical, yet is absolutely perfect.

Happy & Hunky

Normally at this time, I’m either on the long drive between San Francisco and the Inland Emprire (just east of LA) to see my mom… or I’m “finishing up” my shopping at Target. But since I’m in Germany, spending the first holiday with my boyfriend’s family, it’s a bit of a different experience. Putting real candels in the Christmas tree, which I hear we’re going to light with real fire.. a big no-no in over-cautious California, but I hear it’s really nice.

Kezia reminded me what I was missing when she sent along this little snippet of Christmas in LA…

“Happy holidays, lovelies! I’ve been a bit anti-Xmas this year…So it’s a good thing that I discovered Hunky Santa — the L.A. version of Kris Kringle — ripped, with abs of steel. Hunky wears red velvet pants, black shiny boots, a red velvet hat and a fur-trimmed sleeveless vest. I’m not usually an admirer of the toned-n-tanned, oiled-up look, but this Hot Claus puts a smile on my grinchy mug.

Hunky Santa appears after 5 p.m. at the Beverly Center now through Christmas Eve. Now big kids can reveal their Christmas wishes while perched atop Hunky’s lap. For his part, Hunky dispenses healthy living tips (egg nog=bad; whey protein powder=good). Oh, Hunky — how ’bout I just tell you how naughty I’ve been?”

Hehe, all the Christmases I’ve spent in Southern California, and the year I move away is when Hunky Santa comes to town.

But before I go…. and on a less naughty note, if you’re still out there looking for gifts (like I would be, if it were possible to procrastinate any further) TOMS has been running a great charity project to donate 30,000 pairs of shoes to people in Ethiopia, this is to prevent a diesease transmitted from the soil which could be prevented by wearing shoes. For each pair of shoe sold to you, they will donate a pair to someone in Ethiopia gets a pair of shoes. TOMS Shoes are sold internationally, so check the store locator for details… in San Fran they are being sold in American Rag, Eco Citizen and Azalea and several more boutiques.

We’re going to be taking a break for the week here at The Coveted so the posting will slow down, but all three of us Kezia, Sonja and me, Jennine wish you the very best holiday!!!

Simple Days are Near

I know it’s the last day before the holiday week… which seems to be a lot longer than in previous years, the holiday break almost seems like 10 days or yeah… a long time, which is great, but I’m not ready. I’m not ready.

Today I played around a lot with my clothes, I think I must have tried 3 or 4 outfits… and I think the Holiday Diet got to me, becuase nothing is fitting right. In the end I just went with something simple, dark and comfortable clothes, nothing too fussy, or extravagant. And of course, you might have noticed, or maybe not, but I got a new pair of boots a couple of weeks ago. These boots are vintage with zig zag details.

I’ll be in touch next week… just not as frequent…
